Games From The Grave - Tsuji-Ura

Tsuji-Ura is also known as 'Crossroads Divination' or simply 'The Fortune Game'. Whether it is a real game or simply a creepypasta, the goal is always the same: to catch a glimpse of your future.

To play, you will need:

  • One player

  • A comb

  • Something to cover your face

  • A set of crossroads

This ritual must begin at nighttime. You should bring your comb and face covering to your chosen crossroads. Begin by strumming the teeth of the comb with your fingers three times. As you do, repeat the following three times:

Tsuji-Ura, Tsuji-Ura, Grant me a true response.

You must now be patient. Wait, watch and wait some more. If nobody else approaches the crossroads, the ritual has failed. Do not proceed any further. You may try again another time.

Equally, if somebody you know approaches the crossroads, the same applies.

However, if a stranger approaches the crossroads, you have succeeded.

As soon as you see the stranger approach, cover your face with the face covering and do not remove it until it is safe to do so. When they have approached you, you may ask them to tell you your fortune. Always be polite and ask, do not demand and do not uncover your face.

If the stranger does not speak or refuses you, do not proceed. Let them leave before uncovering your face. You can then wait for another stranger to approach and try again.

However, if the stranger answers, you may proceed.

Listen closely and carefully to everything that they have to say. When they are done, thank them for their time and allow them to leave. Only when you are certain that they are gone can you uncover your face.

You may now go about the rest of your life, living with the consequences of whatever you now know.

Tsuji-Ura can be played in any type of environment and can be done in the presence of other people (though there can only be one player – the rest will be bystanders). If you choose to have bystanders along with you, they must each have their own face coverings and should follow the same rules of remaining covered whenever in the presence of a stranger. They should also remain as quiet as possible and not interfere.

You can use a wide variety of face coverings, from scarves and veils to books held in front of the face or wide-brimmed hats tipped downwards.

It is important to note that the stranger can only tell you what they know, and cannot tell you what to do with the information that they provide. That is entirely up to you.
