Bluebird - Ciel Pierlot - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
•••••••••• With HUGE thanks to Angry Robot Books for providing me an ARC •••••••••••••••••
Gunslinging lesbians in space, oh my!
Bluebird by Ciel Pierlot is an epic, sci-fi adventure into a world torn to pieces by three warring factions. Smack bang in the middle of them is Rig, a cocky ex-weapons designer and faction deserter. Hot on her tail is Pyrite, her old faction, desperate to take back the schematics she designed under them and use them for genocidal gains.
Rig does a pretty good job of dodging their clutches until a threat comes to light about her sister’s safety and her paths cross with Ginka, a mysterious and seemingly impossible fighter. Forming an unlikely bond, the two (with occasional assistance from Rig’s librarian girlfriend, June) take on the factions on a mission to save her sister from inevitable torture and death.
Anyone who knows me will know that I’m not particularly fond of sci-fi as a genre. Not for any specific reason, I’m realising. It’s just not been a go-to of mine. But when the concept of Bluebird was pitched to me, I knew I had to snatch up an ARC immediately and boy, am I glad I did!
This book is filled with action, sarcasm and wit, all contained within incredibly lovable characters. The fight scenes are highly visible and detailed, making for no lack of badass moments. The tone is excellent, keeping the darker parts balanced with intelligent sarcasm without making light of any of the horrific events in the story.
Is Bluebird the most unique story I’ve ever read? Absolutely not. Many of the ‘twists’ were highly predictable, long before their narrative reveal. But I thoroughly enjoyed every second spent on this book and I would love to see it adapted to screen one day. Everything from the characters to the plot to the universe itself would lend beautifully to one hell of a movie.
Overall, this book gets an easy 4.5 stars from me and I’m incredibly grateful to Angry Robot Books for letting me get my grubby paws on this ARC! Best of luck to Ciel Pierlot for the release date and I hope to maybe hear more from Rig, Ginka and Co. in the future!
